• What exactly IS the All-Sing event?
The All-Sing event is a celebration of the singers who have volunteered during the 40 years of the Dallas Symphony Chorus. It is an opportunity for past and present DSC members to come together in song and celebrate 40 years of making music. It is a one-day event with scheduled rehearsal of excerpts from some of the DSC’s “greatest hits” and a final, All-Sing of the prepared works. There are also other activities and surprises planned throughout the day to highlight parts of the 40-year history of the group.
• Who can come to the event?
Any past or present DSC member can register and rehearse/sing with the group, although participation is optional. Non-DSC spouses/significant others and guests may also register and attend events throughout the day, but participation in the All-Sing is limited to current/former DSC members.
• What is the schedule for the day?
The schedule is outlined below:
- 8:30 AM - Light Breakfast
- 9:30 AM - Rehearsal
- 12:00 Noon - Lunch and 40th Anniversary Program Presentation
- 2:30 PM – Browse exhibits / “Dress Rehearsal" /change into “performance attire”
- 4:00 PM - All-Sing!
- 6:00 PM (or earlier) - Event concludes - Free time to connect with long-time friends and new friends!
• Can I only come for a portion of the day?
Of course! We understand that not everyone can make a full day’s commitment but we’d love to have you join us for as much as you can. To participate in the All-Sing, it would be best to at least attend the Dress Rehearsal. Registration cost is $20, regardless of partial or all-day participation.
• How were “The 10 Greatest Hits of the DSC" selected and what are they?
”The 10 Greatest Hits of DSC” were selected to represent various genres from 40 years of the chorus. The excerpts chosen ranged from works the DSC has performed many times to those that were group favorites. Other considerations were voice part requirements, length of the excerpt or work, and accessibility for all DSC singers – alumni and current. The music was agreed upon by the 40th Anniversary Committee in conjunction with Maestro Larry Loh. And here is the list:
1. America the Beautiful
2. Requiem – Verdi “Requiem” excerpt
3. Requiem – Brahms “Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen”
4. Requiem – Mozart
- “Dies Irae”
- “Lacrimosa”
5. Carmina Burana – Orff
- “In taberna quando sumus (men only)
- “O Fortuna”
6. Shenandoah – Erb (a cappella)
7. Messiah – Handel “And the Glory”
8. O Magnum Mysterium – Lauridsen (a cappella)
9. Beethoven Symphony No. 9 excerpt
10. We Wish You a Merry Christmas Encore (complete with Hats/Accessories!)
• What about scores for the music?
After you register for the All-Sing, you will receive a link and password to download the excerpts/works we are singing. Of course, you are welcome to bring your own score(s) for any of the works. Something to consider, though – you may not want to hold full scores for all the pieces during the entire All-Sing!
If you do not have access to download scores, please email alumni@dschorus.com, and we will provide scores for you on February 10 at the All-Sing event.
• What if I haven't sung these works before or don’t remember them?
That’s one reason we are providing access to scores in advance! It allows you to “Practice, practice, practice!” However, at the All-Sing on February 10, we will be rehearsing all of the works in the morning and running them again in the afternoon, so you should have a good working knowledge of all the pieces by the time of the All-Sing.
• Is this a concert or will there be an audience?
This event is NOT a public concert of the Dallas Symphony Chorus and is designed solely for the social enjoyment of participating DSC Alumni, current DSC members and invited guests. WE are our own audience in the sense that we are reliving the DSC performance experience with like-minded volunteer musicians. In reality, those DSC members/alumni who choose not to perform, non-DSC spouses/significant others who have registered to attend, and any other invited guests, will be our “audience.”
• What do I wear to the All-Sing?
Attire for the final All-Sing is black to capture that “performance” atmosphere. Black shirts/pants for the men, black tops/skirts/pants or dresses for the ladies. Ladies, please feel free to wear your chorus dress (any era) and jewelry! Men, you may wear your tux if you’d like! You can wear what you want during rehearsals and change before the All-Sing, or wear your performance attire all day.
And finally…don’t forget your black folder/music and your Christmas hat or accessory for the encore finale!
